At the appointed hour, lantern number seven dies first — a clean cut of darkness, as if someone pinched the flame from underwater. The pier boards tremble. Fog beads on the rail like cold sweat.
Dockworkers have already fled inland. Only Captain Mire remains at the landward end, arms folded, watching whether anyone is foolish enough to walk toward the dark.

“Same hour. Same lamp. Same pull.” Mire’s voice carries over the slap of water. “You go past six, you don’t joke. You don’t whistle. And if the water talks, you answer polite.”

Persephone rolls her shoulders once and takes the outer rail. Pyrostrix hops ahead, emberlight painting wet planks in brief, defiant strokes.
“Point,” she says, almost cheerful. “If something under there wants a challenge, it can look us in the eye.”

Lantern six gutters, recovers, gutters again. The darkening marches inward one lamp at a time — seven already gone, six dying by inches, five still proud.
Under the boards, something pale moves like a ribbon of moonwater that forgot which way the tide should go.

“Then we introduce ourselves properly.” She nods at Pyrostrix. “No sneaking. No half-measures. If it’s counting us, let’s give it a number it remembers.”
Pyrostrix’s talons catch the rail as pale light surges up through the gaps. The darkness recoils — not defeated, but noticed. Something under the pier understands it has been challenged.
A soft pressure answers through the boards: like a heartbeat slowed to the pace of the harbor.

Night deepens. Salt and lamp oil. Somewhere a gull cries once and thinks better of it.
The pale ribbon under lantern seven loops once, twice — then pauses, as if waiting for the party to speak first… or to climb down.

Under Moonpier, the world narrows to pillars and breath. The second tide does not roar — it pulls, a sideways gravity that wants lantern-light the way roots want rain.
Pale filaments trail from the underside of lamp seven’s post down into black water. They are not seaweed.

The pull hesitates — surprised, perhaps, to be spoken to like a guest instead of a hazard.
Then the filaments brighten. A shape gathers in the water: not a beast with clear limbs, more a knot of tide-memory wearing a borrowed silhouette. Eyes like drowned lantern glass. A mouth that opens without sound, and somehow you still hear a question.

“Because people walk the pier,” Persephone answers, chin up even as spray freezes on her lashes. “Because Pyrostrix and I don’t leave friends in the dark. The lamps aren’t stealing from you — they’re keeping a promise.”
Rimefin’s spirit-light sketches the entity’s outline without piercing it. What returns is not malice — it is loneliness wearing hunger. The second tide used to rise with the moon’s blessing. Something cut that bond seasons ago. Now it steals lamp-fire because lamp-fire is the only warmth left that answers.

Natalie loosens the ribbon from her wrist and lets it trail in the water — bright fabric against black. Rosette Riveter hums a work-song pitch, the kind used to keep rhythm on festival stages when the crowd gets too quiet.
“You don’t have to steal the lamps,” she says gently. “You can share a night with us. One invitation. One bond. We light you; you leave the pier walking.”
The ribbon does not sink. It floats — then tautens, as if something accepted a handshake.
Rosette Riveter’s Technique lands true: a temporary harbor-bond stitches itself between festival cheer and tide-hunger. Lantern six flares back to life overhead. Seven stays dark… but the dark no longer feels like theft. It feels like a room waiting for guests.

The water answers by opening a path — a narrow corridor of luminous calm leading deeper under the outer pier, toward a place the charts call empty and the tide knows as a wound.
